Feedback from Jack Greenwood, Emily Ryalls and Harley Boothroyd

This week I had the opportunity to gain feedback on my final year project due to be exhibited. This was a great opportunity to interact with practitioners within the industry of photography and gain feedback based upon their area of practise.

I first met with Harley Boothroyd a photography teacher who viewed my original un-bound photobook with minimal images. Then looked through my perfect bound photobook containing more images. Alongside a range of images 9 x 13 cm to look through for sequencing and final images for exhibition.

Boothroyd was able to make a connection to my work and her previous focuses in work when relating to water and ripples exploring calmness and chaos. These emotions portrayed through actions. Feedback included to possibly attempt adding text, repetitive composition and breathing space. Myself and Harley looked through the range of images and picked my strongest three as she suggested a tryptic of after sequencing we both decided the centre one should contrast with both outer images. The idea of an additional frame including a strand of hair portraying the hair within the image might add more detail to my work.

Second review was with Jack Greenwood who usually focuses his time around book making and sequencing. He liked the layout and the feel of the book and said the binding of the book worked well however two images within the sequence seem to be stretched out and also look out of contrast with the other images and ruins the consistency within. He also mentioned the chosen A5 size works well with the meaning behind the images as it seems to be a size of which relates to personal as is the project.

Third and final review came from photographer and Darkroom Project coordinator Emily Ryalls. Who suggested the addition of photograms may work nice focusing on objects in relation to the gestures for example fingernails and strands of hair. Discussing the ideas of others the idea of using a photogram in the 5 x 7 frame instead of real hair was thought to be a good idea to portray a sense of presence whilst remaining a photograph. Other feedback came from lecturers who suggested replacing the digital textured paper as in a copy of a paper type in digital form with the real textured and colour paper possibly ordering from G. F Smith and using the UV printer to print the title to decrease the look of elasticity.
