Today we at the University of Huddersfield had a talk with photographer Alec who graduated at the University of Huddersfield in 2018. He has partnered and worked closely with Thomas Duffield.

In this external talk Aries teaches us students how to print images to the best of their potential through examples of his own work and prints. He started by printing on commercial high density prints working with Magnum photos. He says in order to get your print to the best of its ability its key to set your camera and file properties to the best resolution I order to create the best quality within your images. If considering to print large this needs to ideally be considered from the beginning in order to see that no image quality is lost. To see an images ideal printing resolution and image size open photoshop and it should tell you. 300DPI is usually best

Talking about printing types

  1. Chromogenic print (C type) is a type of pint he mainly uses. The C type uses light dense paper of which reacts to the silver hey light used to form an image through the light laser.

  2. Z/G clay which means to quirt in French. This method is done by squirting ink on to the paper and pigments of individual dots start to form the impression of an image. This method has lots more tones and in Aries opinion more vibrant, an punchier than C type prints. This method offers many more tonal qualities.

He showed us the difference between the two types of prints and it really shows the difference and I second his opinion Z/G clay is by far better than Chromogenic printing methods. He also showed us environmental friendly, composite, reusable fabrics he has used to print on for example 'sticky back matte wall vinyl'.
