This blog looks into the research of studies, statistics, and facts in relation to depression and phototherapy.
During my extended essay, I researched the study of phototherapy and if the socially engaged photographic practice could be used as a tool for change. Looking at practitioners such as Jo Spence, Anthony Luvera, and Dawod Bey alongside researchers Alan Radley and Dianne Taylor.
Photographic tools that have a part to play in phototherapy
Photo elicitation
Photo theatre
Photo meditation
Mirror therapy
Community therapy
The conclusion of this extended essay confirmed that there was no direct answer to whether or not socially engaged photography is a tool for change however the research collated suggests that photography has a positive effect on one's mental health. I have followed the same artistic approach to my work focusing on mental illness/mental health throughout my photographic journey exploring different avenues and relating the knowledge found to global, social, cultural, and environmental practices. Becoming a part of a society that works to encourage independence, communication, and a safe environment to talk and be in.
